Title: Written on the Heart

Scripture: Jeremiah 31: 27-34, Hosea 2: 16-20, Luke 22:14-20

Thought to Remember: The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched – they must be felt with the heart.

–Helen Keller

Talking Points: How may I become alive to God’s presence in my life? In what ways do others see evidence of God at work in my life?

Prayer: Lord, make me alive to your will and your way.

The cable television hit The Walking Dead is an American post-apocalyptic horror series which centers on the lead character, Sheriff’s Deputy Rick Grimes. In the series, Grimes awakens from a coma discovering a world overrun by zombies, commonly referred to as ‘walkers’.

Like these ‘walkers’, many in the Christian faith have become so lifeless, so dead to our potential, to our promise and our purpose, we are quite literally the ‘walking dead’. When we are dead to the spirit, we are nothing more than skin and bones.

What’s deadened us? We embrace law, custom and tradition to the point of becoming lifeless to matters of the heart and of the spirit and to one another. Paul writes, “If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature...” (II Cor. 5:17).

God is proposing a new covenant, a new promise – one that gets to the heart of the matter. If we are open to His presence, God will breathe new life into us.
