Watch Those False Prophets! I Timothy 4:16

This week we announced the premiere of our Jubilee Bible Study Series entitled Watch Your Life: The Believer’s Guide to Thinking, Speaking and Acting Confidently in a Belief-Challenged World (WYL), based on I Timothy 4:16.

Watch Your Life will examine the Apostle Paul’s “watch” theme in his first letter to Timothy. Paul writes with a sense of urgency to Timothy and does so personally, pastorally, and prophetically. Paul does not want Timothy to lose everything he has gained in Christ!

Timothy’s pastorate is under assault from Roman imperial persecution from without and from heresy within. It is the latter which concerns Paul the most; he knew that erroneous doctrine would imperil the church much more diabolically than persecution.

Paul uses the Greek term epecho, which carries the meaning of ‘pay close attention to’. It carries the same theological weight as the term Christ uses in Matthew 26:41 to urge his disciples to “watch and pray” or “stay alert” or “stay woke”.

The word ‘watch’ is sprinkled throughout scripture sixty-one times and is an urgent biblical theme.

Why does Paul urgently caution Timothy to watch or keep alert? Three things are at stake for young Timothy and the church at Ephesus.

One, spiritual growth. Their spiritual growth in Christ depended on following correct doctrine and would lay the foundation for the church’s stability.

Two evangelistic fervor. If their doctrine was corrupted, they would not attract new converts to the faith, let alone keep them.

Mental acuity. Their ability to stay up and keep hope alive in such a volatile environment depended on correct doctrine. God does not want us to lose our minds up in here up in here!

Succinctly, Paul’s message is: Your life is your doctrine. Your doctrine is your life.

The same goes for our modern-day sojourn as believers. If we are to maintain our spiritual integrity, we must watch our doctrine and life! Specifically, we must guard against the virulent forms of false belief systems that pervade our culture.  Scripture speaks often of the need to be on guard against false prophets or those who distort or manipulate God’s word to suit their own agendas (political and otherwise), leading people away from the truth.

Jesus Christ warns, “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.” (Matthew 7:15)

White Christian nationalism, for example, an ideology which posits America is a Christian nation and, therefore, links the cross of Christ to ‘blood’, ‘soil’ and whiteness, poses a grave threat to the integrity of the gospel of Jesus Christ. White Christian nationalism rationalizes that any person or group of persons who do not fit this lineage of whiteness does not belong in America and is one example of extreme false prophecies circulating in America.

Even more ominous to our community, though, is the false notion that we as African Americans must “sit out” the current political backlash to the forced and illegal deportations of Brown people in America. Proponents of this position suggest Black people have done enough and that we have the luxury of becoming spectators to rather than participators in the struggle for peace and justice in America. Although not doctrinally related, it is, nonetheless, antithetical to the movement of scripture, which posits that God is always on the side of peace, and justice and that it is our kingdom duty to assist those who are just as oppressed as us.

The Bible is clear. As believers, we must ‘watch’ for or be ‘on guard’ against the rampant acceleration of forces that deprive God’s creation of dignity, spiritual vitality and our brand-new future in Christ!

Our six-week bible study series, Watch Your Life, will equip the student to identify and fortify ourselves in a world of change, challenge and complexity.
