Three Reasons We Need to Host a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Oratorical Competition in Phoenix.

Here's a sobering fact: Since Arizona voters approved the observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day in November 1992, leading to the first official state celebration on January 18, 1993, Phoenix has yet to host a major oratorical contest honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

While local and statewide annual celebrations feature essay and poster contests, parades, and other symposiums, a dedicated youth oratory competition would be new to the city.

That’s about to change! A steering committee is being formed to organize the details of Phoenix’s first-ever Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Speak Up! Oratory Tournament! aimed at 4th and 5th grade elementary school children.

Here are three reasons why I believe an oratorical contest in honor of Dr. King is needed in Phoenix.

First, to assist in the development of our students’ critical thinking, writing, and speaking skills, which will promote their social, emotional and academic excellence. Through this process, we aim to empower them to discover and confidently express their own voices.

Second, to awaken in younger students an awareness of their emerging leadership role in shaping the “beloved community,” positively contributing to the shared fabric that binds society together.

Third, to elevate and enhance Phoenix’s standing and prestige as a leading destination for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebrations and events. Major markets like Dallas, Houston and Chicago have been sponsoring an MLK oratorical contest for decades! It’s time for Phoenix to do likewise.

The MLK 2027 Speak UP Oratory Tournament invites fourth- and fifth-grade students from Phoenix area schools to write and deliver original 3–5-minute speeches based on a pre-selected topic inspired by Dr. King’s teachings. Participants will deliver a three-to five-minute speech that demonstrates their understanding of Dr. King’s principles while showcasing their critical thinking, writing, and speaking skills. Speeches will be evaluated on stage presence, delivery, content and memorization. Local business and community leaders will serve as judges for the event.

There will be a single winner from each grade level, and the top three finishers will receive awards. Time and place and awards TBA.

Registration starts August 1, 2026. Log on to www.pastorwericcroomes.com for more information.
