Mental health has always been a hush-hush topic in the Black community for a myriad of reasons.
Not too long ago, I came across a statistic as jarring as it is painful. In an essay entitled Mental Health in Black Communities: Challenges, Resources, Community Voices, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), the leading grassroots organization on Black mental health, shared:
63% of African Americans believe seeking mental health treatment is a sign of weakness.
It's jarring because it points to the sobering reality that six out of every ten Black people you come across on any given day are experiencing some form of mental health challenge, even if it's not at the clinical stage.
So, I was pleased to hear about a free event being sponsored by a consortium of African American clinical psychologists called, Rooted in Resilience.
It is a day of "connection, healing and resilience" for our community, the hardest hit of all US ethnic groups when it comes to psychological trauma.
The most important word to me on the build-up to the event is: resources. To actually be around, and engage with, a group of professional Black men and women committed to our mental well-being is refreshing.
I hope our community will take advantage of this event and, if nothing else, connect!
