Believers Mental Health Series: Do This Quick Mental Health Check by Asking These Three Questions

A recent 2020 survey suggests that 8 in 10 people feel their mental health is worse now than the beginning of the global pandemic in 2020. In fact, mental health experts are warning of a colossal uptick in mental health negative outcomes as the pandemic moves into endemic.

It is crucial to give attention to our spiritual and mental health during this time. Ask these three questions for a mental health check.

One: How does my body feel?

Am I tired? Am I feeling constantly lethargic? Aches and pains? Am I out of breath after climbing a flight of stairs?

Focus:

Your body speaks to you every day. When your body is deconditioned, your mind follows suit. If you tend to be sedentary, make the effort to become more active by taking power walks or doing natural body movements at home. Also, incorporate deep breathing and meditation.

Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.

(3 John 1:2)

Two: How is my thinking?

Am I thinking negative or positive thoughts? What is my mental state? Do I feel empowered? Angry? Anxious?

Focus:

What we think dictates what we experience. We become what we think about most. It is important to think thoughts of prosperity, courage and love – even if they do not appear to be our reality.

A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.

(Proverbs 17:22)

Three: How are my relationships?

How are my vertical and horizontal relationships? Am I harboring anger and resentment against someone? Are there relationships that are in need of healing?

Focus:

Relationships can become epicenters of mental anxiety. Our vertical relationship with God matters most. That relationship will set the tone and tenor of our horizontal relationships. It is impossible to control and predict healthy outcomes of relationships, but when we focus on the vertical, we are better equipped to align the horizontal.

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.

(John 14:27)

Make sure to give attention to your physical, mental and spiritual health.
